Radiohead – “High and Dry”

This is a 1995 video of Radiohead performing “High and Dry” at a European TV show. It’s hard to believe this song is now 15 years old. Radiohead is a UK-based “alternative” rock band. I like the fact that this video is not all nicely polished and gives the viewer and idea of what an alternative band looks like before becoming a huge main stream band. Even though Radiohead was formed in 1985 they did not release their first single, “Creep” until 1992. I don’t listen to this song very often anymore, but still enjoy it when I hear it periodically on the radio or the internet. I think what I like about it the most are the words of course and the layers of meaning within the words. In my view, I think the quality of a song and the richness of its depth of meaning is when the listener can take person ownership of a song and interpret the song as it relates to his or her own life. Multiple views, multiple interpretation, reflects the quality of the texture. I’ve listed the words to the song below for your review and hopefully enjoyment. Please leave me a comment on how you interpret the meaning of the song? Enjoy!

“Two jumps in a week, I bet you think that’s pretty clever don’t you boy
Flyin’ on your motorcycle, watching all the ground beneath you drop
You’d kill yourself for recognition, kill yourself to never ever stop
You broke another mirror, you’re turning into something you are not

Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry

Drying up in conversation, you will be the one who cannot talk
All your insides fall to pieces, you just sit there wishing you could still make love
They’re the ones who’ll hate you when you think you’ve got the world
all sussed out
They’re the ones who’ll spit at you. You will be the one screaming out

Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry

Oh It’s the best thing that you’ve ever had
The best thing that you’ve ever, ever had
It’s the best thing that you’ve ever had
The best thing you’ve had has gone away

So don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high, don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me dry”
