Kaskade feat. Skylar Grey “Room For Happiness”

Both the dance and the more acoustic version of this song written and produced by Kaskade are very well done. Great direction that Kaskade took on the production of this track and the use of Skylar for the vocals!

I’ve included a copy of the “Ice mix” version. Enjoy!

Ms, Ms Behaving Lauryn Hill ~ “Doo Wop (That Thing)”

Little old skool hip hop/rap for my post today from the talented Lauryn Hill performing per late 90’s hit “Doo Wop” from her album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. I hadn’t heard this song for a long time, until recently again and was remembering back how much I enjoyed “Doo Wop” when it first came out. I’ve attached Lauryn’s official video for this song, for a couple of reason. Firstly back in the 90’s before digital music had really taken off, a lot more money was available and used in the production of music video’s. So from a stylistic and historical point of view the structure and quality of the music video is important in my view. Secondly, I really like the structural core of this video and how it’s used to showcase “Doo Wop”. The lighting, setting, cutting and reference points to New York City in 1967 & 1998 is very interesting to me. It my view it would be kind of cool for Lauryn to perhaps do a 2012 remix version of her own song and do a new video perhaps with the reference points being New York City in 1998 and 2012! In any event, take a look at the video and offer a comment if you like. Hope you enjoy “Doo Wop” as much as I do!

Norah Jones ~ Say Goodbye Live Performance

My triple play post of Norah Jones performing “Say Goodbye” live. I was driving down the highway late last night, when this song came streaming over the satellite airway and I knew at the moment that I had to post this song up on my blog. Say Goodbye is from Norah’s latest album “Little Broken Hearts” and this live performance was film in April of this year. I really like the creative direction that Norah has taken with her current album. Say Goodbye has this really cool sound/feel to it that has an almost indie/alt rock kind of vibe to it, in my view. I really appreciate it when a musical artist I like is willing to branch out and experiment with different sounds and styles in the songs they write and record. Keep up the great work Ms Norah Jones!

Hope you enjoy “Say Goodbye” as much as I did.

Norah Jones ~ “You’ve Runied Me” Performed live

I’m a big fan of Norah Jones; does it show? She has such an incredible vocal range, she’s a skillful writer and just an all around outstanding talented lady. Most importantly she sings and performs from deep within her soul!

I’ve include a live performance of Norah doing her song “You’ve Ruined Me”. In my opinion this version of “You’ve Ruined Me” is a tad to short, but it’s a very good live recording (sound wise) nevertheless and therefore the reason I’ve included it in this posting. Hope you enjoy this presentation of Norah’s song as much as I do.

“Can’t Find My Way Home” ~ Steven Winwood & Eric Clapton

Not that anyone has noticed I’m sure, but I took my blog off-line for the last month for a bit of a break! The purpose of this blog hasn’t been to “sell” stuff so traffic numbers to my blog is not of prime importance to me and certainly not why I started this blog. I’ll leave the traffic count issues to those addicted to SEO crack and hyper-linking junkies. Whether or not I keep my blog online again remains a bit up in the air, but if I do keep the blog going, I think it’s time to re-brand DJ Splash Kidd a bit. Perhaps DJ Splash Kidd V2?

“Can’t Find My Way Home” was originally recorded by the very short-lived late 1960’s band, Blind Faith. Blind Faith was comprised of the following members Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood & Rich Grech. One of the strongest tracks recorded by Blind Faith, in my view, was “Can’t Find My Way Home” that was written by Steve Winwood. Over the years since the song was originally recorded both Winwood and Clayton have preformed this song during various live performances. In 2007 Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton reunited for a live performance at the second annual Crossroad Guitar Festival held at Bridgeview Illinois. It is from this reunited performance of Steven Winwood and Eric Clapton that I share with you via YouTube (thank the Goddess for YouTube!!!) a video of “Can’t Find My Way Home”. This is an absolutely brilliant live version of this song that is being performed by two very good old friends who originally recorded this song almost 40 years after it was first released on vinyl. The various points in the song when both Winwood and Clapton are doing lead guitar solo’s together is magical in how they can blend so well with each other; true artistry.

Now anyone who actually knows me, or who has at least read some of my postings before (which is like maybe a half-dozen people at best) I like to dwell in the world of metaphors & similes now and then. So from a strictly metaphorical point of view, this song and the reason I’m posting it now has a lot to do with my use (or perhaps earlier use) of the avatar Splash Kidd. Splash Kidd recently turned 5 within the virtual world of Second Life in March of this year. It was an interesting point for me to reflect on the past, the present and the future. It reminded me to of a blog post from few years ago I read by a person who ended up totally deleting their entire Second Life account and the reason for doing that even-though the person in question avatar had been highly “successful” within the realm of Second Life. You see, Second Life is a lot like falling down a very deep virtual rabbit hole and then before you know it, you might not be able to find your way home again, if one doesn’t watch out. Well perhaps, but even in the darkest moment, one can still find their way back home again, or perhaps to a new better home! The tight-rope and fine balance between ones real life and ones virtual life is never easy.

In any event enough of metaphors that deal with avatars, this is a great performance by two exception song writers and guitar players who know exactly the three-dimensional aspect of what music really is! Enjoy!

“Every Thing She Does Is Magic” ~ Sting (live)

Two live versions of “Every Thing She Does is Magic” by Sting. The first version is in a medium to larger venue, well produced, and very good sound recording. The second is a recent live version of the same song in a smaller venue in San Francisco that must have been recorded by a patron near the front of the stage. The second video’s picture quality is great, however the sound recording isn’t as good as the first video version on this posting, but it is still a cool! Enjoy

A Silent Film ~ Driven by Their Beating Hearts

In 2010 A Silent Film released their album “The City That Sleeps” that have a number of good tracks worth listening to. I’ve included with this blog posting a Youtube video of “Driven by Their Beating Hearts” from “The City That Sleeps” album. Both their song, & the video that A Silent Film has produced to help visually represent their song, has an enjoyable whimsical type of beat to it. I love the fact, too that the two main actors chosen for the video don’t look at all like “Barbie & Ken”. Hope you enjoy this song & video as much as I do!

Deadmau5 ~ Sofi Needs A Ladder Feat. Sofi

TGIF everyone! The Ides of March is now behind us by a day, so time for me to venture forth with a new blog post.

In regards to watching live acts, I prefer smaller venues to see life shows these days; two thousand people max if possible. Ideal venue sizes are in the five hundred to thousand people range such that one can get up close to the band, singer or DJ if they like, but still have enough people in the venue to give the live act the right amount of energy. That being said I’ve attached a YouTube video of Deadmau5 performing live at the Roskilde Music Festival last Summer, “Sofi Needs a Ladder”, featuring Sofi on the vocals of course! The venue used at the Roskilde Festival is rather large so Deadmau5 is far to removed from the audience in my view.

According to the Roskilde web site “Roskilde Festival is the largest North European culture and music festival and has existed since 1971. they are a non-profit organization consisting of about 25 full-time employees and thousands of volunteers. Each year, The Roskilde Festival Charity Society, which is the association behind Roskilde Festival, ensures that the profits from the festival are donated directly to humanitarian and cultural purposes.” Here is a link to the Roskilde web site: Roskilde Music Festival.

Given that so many people are not buying music anymore, I guess I can understand why performers are playing bigger and bigger live venues if they have the draw capacity. The positive cash flow for professional performers these days is from touring not in the selling of their music. In any event, this is a live recording of Sofi Needs a Ladder (I hope it’s not lip synced) and Ms. Sofi of course adds her visual charms and vocal talents to the live performance too by Deadmau5! The crowd is into it, it’s a great song and the energy is up beat! Enjoy!
