Digital Builds at Relay for Life of Second Life 2012

I’ve included a few pictures I took last night and early this morning of a few of the builds at Relay for Life of Second Life (“RFL of SL”) 2012 this year. The actual relay run took place this past weekend; July 14th to July 15th 2012, however the 35 sims used to hold this years event in Second Life are up until Friday July 20th. The various builds at RFL of SL started to come down today. My time, was limited to really explore the large & diverse variety of digital builds at RFL of SL 2012. I really wish I had more time. The pictures I did get to snap off hopefully gives you a little idea of what really is a magical event held each year in the virtual world of Second Life. Can’t wait till RFL of SL 2013 starts now! Go Relay Go! Fighting cancer, helping others and being a part of the “Great Good” that’s what it’s all about!

Splash DJ for T1Radio Coverage of Relay For Life of Second Life July 14th to July 15 2012

The last weekend events for the 2012 Relay for Life of Second Life (“RFL of SL”) season takes place this weekend from July 14th to July 15th 2012. One of the main web sites for the RFL in SL 2012 campaign can be accessed via the following link Relay for Life of Second Life There are lots of good information at the RFL of SL website that will given the reader both current and background information about the organization and events taking place this weekend. The Second Life Wiki on RFL of SL can be accessed by the following link that also has lots of great background information, especially as it relates to historical information and the growth of this real life charity event that is held within the metaverse Second Life Wiki The key event that takes place at RFL of SL is the walking of the track that will cover 35 separate sims! The massive effort of the many talented builders, coders, organizers, writers, teams and committee members is mind-blowing when one first arrives at the sims for RFL of SL.

Relay for Life (“RFL”) in the United States of America website is at the following link, Relay For Life RFL is one of the key fund-raising methods for the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Societies main web site can be accessed at the following link American Cancer Society While the RFL of SL is closely related to the American Cancer Society it is an International event that has people from counties from all over the world take part in (over eighty countries last year)! Likewise, funds raised by RFL of SL, benefits member countries, roughly nineteen in total, who are part of the Relay for Life structure. As such RFL of SL is truly an International organization that knows no boundaries! As a Canadian DJ, with friends and family all over the world, I’m really happy to take part in this International event in the fight against cancer!

This is my fourth year in a row now that I will one of the DJ at the last weekend event for RFL of SL. I’m deeply honoured and privileged to help out, in my small way, an organization, and be part of a volunteer group of people who I strongly believe showcase the positive and powerful ways that a three-dimensional virtual world can be used to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. This year I will be a guest DJ with T1Radio. T1Radio is one of the largest classic rock radio stations in Second Life, who has been the official radio station for RFL of SL since 2006. Trader1 Whiplash, who is one of the owners of T1Radio, along with Nuala Maracas, is a dedication person who uses his knowledge and experience as one of the leading voices for the RFL of SL organization in the fight against cancer. A good DJ friend, and someone who in her own right has also been very involved with RFL in SL Shayla Juran was kind enough to introduce me to Trader1, and by way of her assistance, has helped me again to see how one can be a part of the larger Second Life community in a very positive way. Bridging the Virtual World with the Real World in the fight against cancer!

My DJ set time with T1Radio is from 1:00 am to 2:00 am Second Life Time (“SLT”) and for those of you who might not known SLT = Pacific Standard Time! T1Radio coverages is for 35 sims being used for the RFL of SL events this weekend so please take a bit of time out of your virtual world travels to check out the RFL sims! If you’re not able be in Second Life this weekend you can always keep up-to-date to the events happening at RFL of SL by listening in directly via the radio player at the T1Radio web site that goes 24/7!

The Spirit of Burn2 2011 in Second Life

This is a bit of a post DJ event review by yours truly on my DJ gig at Burn2 this year in Second Life on Sunday October 3 2011. I DJ from 9pm to Midnight and my oh my what a great time it was! If there is a magical moment each year in Second Life for me it’s the week-long community event called Burn2 that is the metaverse’s equivalent of the RL Burning Man event that takes place each year in the Northern Nevada desert area near Black Rock. Due to real life (“RL”) commitments this year I wasn’t able to be at Burn2 as much as I would like, but I did get to hear several DJ perform at the Tokyo Stage during the week and a couple of live musicians too at the Center Stage. I BIG shout out and thank you to all the volunteers (Rangers, Greeters, Bloggers, Managers, Coordinators, Performers, DJ’s, Builders, etc., who help to make the Burn2 event this year such a cool and fun experience!. A special thanks to several people at Burn2 who I’ve gotten to know; GOLAN Eilde for his faith in my abilities to DJ within the Burn2 vibe, to Doc Gascoigne who’s “burning” spirit is legendary, to Honour McMillan who’s approach to Second Life and eye for detail I find incredibility calming, to Sporty Tone for his faith in my abilities and long hours making sure the streams work at the various stages, to Lixxin for her long hours too when Sporty was allowed to get some rest in RL, and to Joannelynne my Stage Manager this year who help keep the type chat going when I was lost in playing with various nobs (not noobs!) on my mixing board. Burn on everyone, can’t wait to next year.

Here are as few pictures from my gig at Burn2 this year and the various avatar looks of those who were in attendance!

I’ve added int a fun YouTube video that some people made recently at the RL Burning Man festival just to give you a bit of a flavor of what it means to be a “Burner”! Enjoy!

Fantasy Faire Camp at Relay for Life of Second Life 2011 ~ Luminaria Ceremony

I’ve put up a few pictures I took during the luminary ceremony that took place on Saturday July 16th at the Relay for Life of Second Life 2011 (“RFL of SL 2011) RFL of SL Blog festivities while I was with my Fantasy Faire team members. The lighting of the luminary candles is one of the most moving aspect of the entire weekend events during the RFL of SL season. Cancer survivors, those battling cancer and their caregivers walk the track during the luminary ceremony during a silent time that last for an hour. During this silent hour the names of people who have lost their battle to cancer and the short tributes to them is read and broadcasted over the media stream at all the sims involved in the RFL of SL final weekend events. This year there was a total of forty-two (42) sims that covered the RFL of SL events.

I want to say a big congratulations to all the tireless volunteers and worker who have made the RFL of SL organization into showcase of what can be achieved in respect to the utilization of a virtual world environment to help raise awareness and funding to fight the battle against cancer.

I want to thank Shayla Juran, the coördinator for the DJ stages and line of the DJ’s for this year’s RFL of SL final weekend, for her support and faith in my abilities to help out as a DJ too.

I want to express my thanks and gratitude to the organizers and members of the Fantasy Faire RFL of SL team Fantasy Faire who allowed me to be a DJ performer for them this year on two (2) separate occasions in regards to fund-raising activities for the 2011 RFL of SL season. I always want to thank those members of the Fantasy Faire team who really took me under their wing and made me feel welcomed as a member of their team this year. I especially want to thank Ember Farina for being such a big part of not only the RFL of SL 2011 organization committee but for also shining a very real light on me in respect to what it means to “Relay for Life”.

Splash Kidd DJ @ Relay For Life in Second Life ~ Saturay July 16th, 2011 10 pm to 11 pm PST

I’m please to announce to all of my friends, followers, music lovers and supporters of the real life non-profit charity organization know world-wide as “Relay for Life” that I will be DJ on behalf of the Relay for Life in Second Life on Saturday July 16th, 2011. My DJ Flyer for this event that I will be distributing to all of my friends, followers, colleagues, etc. in Second Life is noted below:

Relay For Life of Second Life (“RFL of SL”) is the largest run non-profit real life charity that does events and raises money within the virtual world know as Second Life. For those of you who are not aware of Relay for Life I’ll repost a short history about RFL that is part of the information package that is use to spread awareness to people within Second Life:

“History of Relay – Celebrating Hope

One person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington. In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office and to show support for all of his patients who had battled cancer. He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed – running marathons.

In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. He ran for more than 83 miles. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. Throughout the night, friends donated $25 to run or walk with Dr. Klatt for 30 minutes. His efforts raised $27,000 to fight cancer.

While circling the track those 24 hours, Dr. Klatt thought about how others could take part in his mission to fight cancer. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight cancer. Over the next few months, he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event, known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.

In 1986, with the help of Pat Flynn – now known as the “Mother of Relay” – 19 teams took part in the first team Relay event on the track at the historic Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that dotted the infield.

Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with more communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives.

UNTIL THERE IS A CURE. . . .WE RELAY!!

The theme of this years RFL campaign within Second Life is “Season of Hope” and a brief description from the Second Life information package is as follows:

“Get ready to Relay!

After four months of fundraising, Second Life® Relayers will be gathering on July 16-17 for the seventh annual Relay For Life® of Second Life track event to CELEBRATE, REMEMBER and FIGHT BACK.

The track covers 34 of the 42 Relay sims. It brings to a close the very biggest and best Relay For Life fundraising season ever in Second Life with over 3,000 volunteers and team members, and 130 teams who have so far raised an amazing US$304,000.

Stingray9798 Raymaker ( in real life Jeff Montegut, the American Cancer Society representative in Second Life) said: ‘Thanks to the tremendous support of our volunteers, teams, committee members, and corporate partners, we have already passed our goal of
raising US$300,000, which is also the most money ever raised in a single Relay season in Second Life. This means more money that funds the mission of the American Cancer Society – research, education, prevention, patient support and global advocacy. I’m confident that this year’s success means that we have entered a new golden era of Relay For Life in Second Life, and I can’t wait to personally thank everyone at the event this weekend!’

New this year

The theme of this year’s Relay is ‘Seasons of Hope’, a theme that has inspired some of the most imaginative events and builds ever during the four-month season of team fundraising events.

This year there are some exciting innovations. For example:
– a special ‘Teams R Us’ clubhouse where teams can hold events away from the track so that they can celebrate without lagging the track sims. The Event Day committee has a list of dj’s who are standing by and ready to be reserved by the teams.
– Two sponsored theme laps. These are sponsored by KittyCatS and Amaretto Breedables, both of whom have already raised large sums for Relay by launching limited edition ‘Seasons of Hope’ kitties and horses.

– A Relay For Life of Second Life Visitors Guide to help visitors navigate the sims.

Introduction to Relay

Visitors who are new to Relay should head straight for the Welcome Area: http://slurl.com/secondlife/RELAY%20FOR%20LIFE/94/124/22 where there is a lot of helpful information to help them get started and where there will be volunteer greeters to answer questions and give out the 2011 Visitors Guide.

The Welcome Center is surrounded by over 95 flags of real world nations represented by team members, volunteers and supporters. There is information in different languages to help visitors from different parts of the real world to get oriented.

OPENING – The event opens at 10:00am on Saturday with the Opening Ceremonies, where the Fundraiser Club Banner Awards for 2011 will be presented to the teams by APinkSwan Beauchamp, the 2011 Awards Committee Lead.
CELEBRATE – Over 150 cancer survivors and caregivers have registered to take part in the ‘honor walk’ which will start immediately after the opening ceremonies, followed by the team spirit lap.
REMEMBER – At 9:00pm the track sims are turned to midnight to light up the thousands of luminaria (candles) along the track, each representing a survivor or someone who has passed from cancer. For one hour people walk the track in silence as the dedications are read out.
FIGHT BACK – at 6:00am is the Fight Back Ceremony when people gather together to make a personal pledge to help fight cancer. It might be by pledging to have a regular breast exam, to follow a healthy diet, or to stop smoking.
VICTORIOUS – the event runs through to noon on Sunday. The Closing Ceremonies take place at 10:00am followed by the ‘Take THAT, Cancer!’ victory lap at 11:00am.

Themed laps

There are some imaginative themed laps between the main ceremonies. On arrival at the track visitors will see signs up above them that display the current lap theme.

New themes to Relay are the ‘Purrfect Pets’ lap sponsored by KittyCaTS when avatars can wear animal print, neko ears, tails or be an animal or furry avatar; and the ‘Ride Your Favorite Horse’ lap sponsored by Amaretto Breedables when they can ride their favorite horse or wear their horse avatar.

Other laps include ‘Winter Nights’, ‘Spring Fling’, ‘Beach Party’ (summer), ‘Fall Fashion’, ‘The Power of Purple’, ‘Midnight Masquerade’, a fantasy lap, and an international lap when people can wave their national flag or walk the lap in national costume.

Just before the ‘Fight Back’ ceremony is the ‘Up All Night’ lap when walkers can choose to wear curlers, PJs and slippers and drink some coffee to wake them up.

Event Day Chair Nikki Mathiesen says: ‘these themed laps are totally optional but fun to take part in or simply enjoy the efforts of those who do. Feel free to interpret each theme with all the creative energy that embodies Second Life!’
Off-the-track activities

Off the track there are some wonderful creative builds by some of the best of SL’s talented builders. Inspired by the four seasons, there are gardens to explore, forests to wander through, and water to sit beside and contemplate, as well as a Japanese village and a pyramid in the jungle.
And there is an abundance of activities waiting for visitors. For the active, look out for the bobsled course, ice fishing, snail racing, the bull ride, as well as the water ride, water slide, and bumper boats at the water park.
The Seasons of Hope Water Park also features the Jules Verne submarine ride and Nautilus Exhibit, Mermaid Cove Sandcastle & Cabana Area featuring Reggae DJs, Treasure Island and Navy Fort, a working pirate town and gypsy camp, navy and pirate ship battles, and surfing, sailing and fishing.

For those with Lindens rattling in their wallets, there is a shopping hamlet, silent and live auctions, an art show and sale, and raffle. NEW this year is the silent and live breedables auction. Visitors will also be able to buy the limited edition ‘Seasons of Hope’ KittyCaTS kitties and Amaretto horses, and the Linden bears.
For those who just want to sit back and chill out, there is plenty of entertainment at the Four Seasons Theatre – featuring Alice in Wonderland, Short Plays, Machinima Productions and Tribute Bands. Space is limited so contact Still Braveheart to reserve a seat.
And of course, live music … two stages house this year’s live music with performances, non-stop on the Main Music region and on the country music region, where visitors can listen while they shop the auctions.
MamaP Beerbaum, 2011 Event Chair, said: We have had an amazing season. Our volunteers have worked non-stop, their commitment and dedication have never wavered! We are looking forward to Relay Weekend, where we will come together to Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back. Relay For Life of Second Life has given the rest of the world reason to take notice! We have proved that in this virtual environment, amazing things can happen and we CAN make a difference! Congratulations to each and every avatar that was involved in this year’s relay!’

About Relay For Life of Second Life

Relay For Life® is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) is an annual activity that takes place in Second Life® in July each year. Volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness from mid-March through mid-July. In July teams build campsites and walk a track, just like in a real world Relay. The main RFL of SL track event this year will take place on July 16-17. In 2010, RFL of SL raised US$222,000 for the American Cancer Society and this year’s total has reached US$304,000 before the start of the track event. In April 2011 the all-time total amount raised since RFL was launched in Second Life reached one million US dollars. The funds raised go to research, advocacy, patient services and programs, with 12-15% going to international projects. Just as in the real world, RFL of SL is an international event. Fantasy Faire 2011 ~ DJ Splash BPM 128

Relay for Life, for those not aware, is one of the largest, charity organization in the world today that raises much-needed money for the ongoing fight and treatment of Cancer. Several years ago, 2004 to be exact, a group of dedicated member of Second Life, decided to start-up a Relay for Life event “in world” via this unique 3D virtual environment to raise money for the real world charity organization, the American Cancer Society via the Relay for Life platform. Since that time Relay for Life in Second Life has grown at a very steady pace from year to year and is now the largest charity organization structure in Second Life that involves thousands of Avatars, which ultimately are thousands of real people from around the world all working on the cause of fighting cancer. If ever there was one single positive cause demonstrating both the power and collective good-will actions of so many people from around the world via a virtual environment, Relay for Life in Second Life (“RFL in SL”) is the cake, the icing and the cherry on top, in my view. If you go to the Relay for Life website you will find a link to the RFL in SL web site and from there learn about just what a positive, influential virtual world organization this is. To give you a bit of flavor of what RFL in SL is all about I’ve included a web link to the wiki web site for you:

Second Life BuddyWalk Charity Event – Monday March 21, 2011

I’m DJ this evening at the third annual Second Life BuddyWalk at Unico Island from 10 pm (SLT = PST) to 11 pm.

The Second Life BuddyWalk is endorsed by and ultimately raises funds on behalf of the National Down Syndrome Society, which is a charity organization in the United States of America.

If you’re a resident of Second Life and able to come out to hear me DJ this evening at the Second Life BuddyWalk it would be greatly appreciated!

This is the second year in a row that I will be DJ at this event and I’m very much looking forward to it. Noted below are web links to the Second Life Buddywalk web site and the web site to the National Down Syndrome Society’s web site too for further information:

DJ Splash’ Invite Card to his Gig at Burn2 – Thursday October 21, 2010 10pm to Midnight (PST)

I’m scheduled to DJ at Burn2 in Second Life on Thursday, October 21st, 2010 at 10pm to Midnight (PST). I’ll be performing on the Berlin Stage and plan on doing at Vocal House/Vocal Electro Dance kind of mix. All things being equal I should be using Traktor Scratch Pro as my mixing DJ software for this gig.

For those who are not aware, Burn2 is a Second Life community run event that goes from October 16th to October 24th and is the virtual world equal to the real life Burning Man event that is held in the desert location of Nevada, USA. The Founder, CEO of Linden Labs, the company behind Second Life, has previously indicated in interviews he’s given that he went to a Burning Man event several years ago when he was just putting together Second Life and found the experience to such a great inclusive community based experience that reflected a lot of the values he wanted to develop into the Second Life virtual world platform. As such Burn2 helps to celebrate for a week some of the core values of what the Second Life virtual experience is all about. Even if you can’t make it out to my gig this Thursday, and you’re a member of Second Life, please take some time to check out this great event that celebrates so many areas of creative expression within the artistic communities.
